L’ange et le Diable

The refined art of the French Baroque finds one of its most expressive voices in the viola da gamba. Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray, both virtuosos in the court of Louis XIV, elevated the instrument to new heights — Marais through elegance and lyricism, Forqueray through passion and brilliance. This program explores their contrasting styles, from the noble dances of Marais’ Première livre de pièces de viole and Forquerays’ fiery character pieces, enriched by arrangements from Marais’ opera Alcione and Lullys’ Armide.
